We started the day in Davenport, Iowa along the Mississippi River and we have ended the day by the Missouri River in Sioux City Iowa! We drove 404 miles in 641 driving time. Of course, that doesn't count time stopped along the way.
We started out heading to a park along the Mississippi River and walked a little way.
It had cute little swings where you could relax and watch the water flow.
There were river boats getting ready to lazily float on the river.
Our next stop was the Mormon Trail Center at Historic Winter Quarters, in Omaha, Nebraska. Here we learned more about the Mormon pioneers and their incredible journey across the plains. They had been persecuted and driven from their homes in Illinois and left looking for a place to worship in peace. Winter Quarters was a place for the pioneers to spend the cold winter months before traveling further west.
Some of them came pushing handcarts!
Many of the them buried loved ones, like the couple depicted in this statue. It is actually placed in the Mormon Pioneer Cemetery over the burial site where many little pioneer children were laid to rest.
Right next to the cemetery is the beautiful Winter Quarter's temple.
The pioneers survived many trails and heartaches. Their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ helped them to carry on. We face trials in life too, although our trials today are much different. However, I know that faith in the Lord Jesus Christ can help us endure our trials just like it did the pioneers!
